Young Lady Chevrons in camp

THE Zimbabwe Under-19 women’s cricket team’s technical team is set to utilise the school holidays for their preparations for the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Malaysia and Thailand.

With the majority of the players making the Young Lady Chevrons team still in school, Under-19 coach Trevor Garwe revealed that they had seen it fit to conduct holiday camps as part of the preparations for the World Cup.

“The team is composed mainly of high school students hence the need to utilise the school holidays for the training camps.

“We always want to take advantage of the school holidays when we can get all our players together,” said Garwe.

A total of 24 players picked from national trials are in camp up until April 20.

“We have a provisional squad of about 24 players that we selected last year when we had our Under-19 national trials.

“The next step we are looking to trim down as we are getting closer to the end of the year,” said Garwe

“The main reason for these camps is to make sure we are up-skilling our players, things that we are working on are fitness and all the three aspects of cricket which is bowling, batting and fielding,” said the Under-19 coach.

With three players in the Under-19 having already made their national team debuts, Garwe believes their presence will be of great value to the team.

The trio comprises 17- year-old bowler Kudzai Chigora, 15-year- old Christine Mutasa and Beloved Biza.

“I think having some of the players in our squad who have played for the senior national team is a big plus for us.

“They will bring a wealth of experience to the squad as they know what is expected of them when they represent Zimbabwe at a global tournament,” said Garwe.
