The residents said police officers abandoned a police post in their area because it had no toilets and sanitation facilities for use by the law enforcement agents.

They said this has led to the area becoming a hotspot for criminal activities as there are no police patrols during the evenings.

The residents have tried to establish a local neighbourhood watch but the idea fell on deaf ears they most residents think their area is safe as it is a gated community.

Speaking of behalf of the residents, Ms Ropafadzo Mapimhidze who is a former committee member of Tynwald North Residents Association said lack of police presence in Tynwald North has made the area and its residents more vulnerable to criminal acts.

“We have a police post but is has no police officers because it has no toilets and proper ablution facilities for the police officers to use. What is lacking at the police post is just a toilet seat and tap water. So this has opened us to all sorts criminal activities in the area, even drug abuse.

“Young people are engaging in drug abuse because there is no one monitoring the area as there are no police officers. We would be very happy to have a proper police post with police officers operating in the area to reduce criminal activities,” she said.

Late last year, residents of Tynwald North expressed a great concern over the unprecedented levels of criminal activities taking place in their area.

The residents said the suburb had become a target as it is a gated community with one entrance and exit point.

They expressed concern over an armed robbery incident in which seven armed robbers pounced on a house along 11th Street and ransacked the property getting away with cellphones, money and food.

At the time of the robbery, chairman of the Tynwald North Residents Association Mr Henry Dutiro pleaded with the residents to work together in combating criminal activities in their neighborhood.

“Well my plea to residents is to say let us find each other in terms of issues to do with security namely neighborhood, rehabilitation of our roads and the disadvantaged. We are a small community such that we can mobilize ourselves and come up with measures to curb these things,” he said.
