Ward 9 Councillor Musarurwa Mutizwa has dismissed reports that he has not been reporting and attending to council duties saying he has never been AWOL (absent without official leave).

Cllr Mutizwa told Suburban on Monday that he is conducting his duties as normal.

“I am always here and conducting my duties as usual, both at council and in the ward,” he said.

Cllr Mutizwa said in the ward, potholes have been patched along Coronation Avenue and Wilson Avenue in Greendale.

“We also cleaned up most of the dumps,” he said.

Some opposition leaders including Harare East Member of the National Assembly Mr Tendai Biti have accused Cllr Mutizwa and Ward 46 Councillor Stewart Wutawunashe of having gone AWOL.

In an interview at a Harare East Constituency Development Fund meeting held in Greendale last month, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the two councillors had rejected the people.

“They are no longer citizens-focused, they are now focused on primitive accumulation and also getting as much as they can get before their terms of office expire or before they are chased by the people but we will do their work,” said Councillor Mafume.

At the same meeting, Ward 8 Councillor Keith Charumbira said they will be covering up for Cllr Mutizwa in his absence.

This was after a resident asked if the councillors attending the meeting were standing in for Cllr Mutizwa.

But Cllr Mafume said Cllr Mutizwa is not returning.

“We will have to cover up and make sure that the residents do not suffer lack of service delivery because of the delinquency of an individual,” he said.

Greendale residents have also been wondering whether Cllr Mutizwa – who once acted as Harare Mayor- was still their representative.

However, sources within the municipality confirmed that Cllr Mutizwa and Cllr Wutawunashe were attending council business.
