THE City of Harare this week cleared five illegal dumpsites in Ward 41 with residents urged to embrace waste separation where they sort out their waste and take recyclable materials for recycling to prevent illegal dumpsites.

Council workers cleared dumpsites in the Westgate Area D, in Marlborough around the Redroofs, civic centre flats, at Marlborough district office, and around Admiral Tait Road.

Since last week council has been clearing the dumpsites in residential areas and at business premises and public places using front end loaders and the new tipper trucks it received recently.

The municipality has since issued a dumpsite clearance schedule for the whole capital city covering the 46 wards in Harare.

Of late some residents had resorted to dumping their rubbish on open spaces and even at council district offices because the municipality was failing to effectively collect garbage due to incapacitation after most its refuse compactors broke down leaving it with about eight only.

On Monday, the City of Harare took delivery of three new refuse compactors bought using devolution funds. Council said an additional seven compactors and 10 tipper trucks were on the way.

Ward 41 Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe thanked residents who gave positive feedback and encouraged them to embrace waste separation as it minimises illegal dumping.

“I engaged residents and we received a list of 14 dumpsites and we managed to clear five. The illegal dumpsites in our ward were caused by lack of refuse collection by the City of Harare. I then engaged the waste management division with a plan to clean up our community and get rid of the dumpsites and ensure that council collects in each area at least once a month consistently,” she said.
