Connaught road: Contractor appointed

Government has appointed a contractor who will work on Connaught Road in Avondale as well as the junction of Harare Drive and Lomagundi (Nemakonde).

It is also expected to carry out reconstruction of Harare Drive from Kirkman (Solomon Mujuru Drive) to Lomagundi Road.Repairs were carried out in the not so distant past on some of the roads but they are now full of potholes. 

City of Harare principal communications officer, Mr Innocent Ruwende said council is also working on a tender for Dr Nyamutswa Road connecting Wards 16 and 41 (Sanganai Inn area up to Westgate.

“Connaught, Harare Drive are being worked on by Government which has since appointed a contractor.

“As for Nyamutswa, we are working on the tender,” he said. 

Harare West residents had during their feedback meetings requested that repairs be carried out on Dr Nyamutswa Road among other roads.

According to an ERRP 2021 progress report for May, a pothole patching exercise to the tune of US$45 750,00 is expected to take place on Prince Edward/Connaught and King George Roads under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2) Phase 1 and 2.

The report reads that the city advertised for a private contractor for the re-gravelling of Dr Nyamutswa Road whose estimated cost is Z$4 944, 139, 20. The city also advertised for a private contractor for the reclaim/spray and chip on that road whose estimated cost is Z$76 146 000,00.  

The says improvements of junctions at a cost of US$48 800, 00 are also expected to be carried out on Harare Drive and Lomagundi Road with funding from ERRP2 Phase 1 and 2.

According to the report, filter lanes will be added on Harare Drive and the widening of turning lanes on Kirkman Road in January next year at a cost of US$120 000 and will be considered in the 2022 ERRP Phase 3.

Filter lanes are expected to be added to Harare Drive and Mutare Road in January next year at a cost of US$500 000 while more space will be created on that roundabout to make it bigger as a way of decongesting traffic at a cost of US$750 000 bringing the total cost to US$1 250 000 under the 2022 ERRP Phase 3.

Filter lanes are also expected to be added to the Westgate roundabout at a cost of US$280 000 under the 2022 ERRP Phase 3.

Alpes Road will be widened under ERRP2 Phase 3 budget of US$4 125 000 while Kirkman Road is expected to be widened under the same programme at a cost of US$6 175 000.   

Council is said to have also advertised for a contractor for the repair and reseal of Alpes Road whose estimated cost is Z$15 288 000.

Re-gravelling by council is also expected to take place on Lavenham Drive at an estimated cost of Z$5 297 292,00 while reconstruction or 25mm premix is expected to take place on Teviotdale Road in Mt Pleasant.

Council has advertised for a private contractor to work on the road whose estimated cost is Z$25 200 000,00.

Traffic lights are also expected to be installed at the corner of Emmerson Mnangagwa Road and Ridgeway South in Highlands, Emmerson Mnangagwa Road and Gletwyn Road, corner of Arcturus Road and Harare Drive in Greendale, Harare Drive and Gaydon Road in Borrowdale and Alpes and Whitwell Roads.
