A resident of Mandara has condemned the illegal dumping of rubbish taking place near his house which he also described as a health hazard.

The resident said there are people dumping refuse on the pathway connecting Banchory and Shaneragh Roads in Mandara.

The illegal dumping of garbage is also a concern because of the health hazards residents have to face.

“It’s becoming ridiculous.

“The garbage is a health hazard.

“Used diapers and other contaminates are being dumped along the path. School children use that path every day,” said the Mandara resident.

Stray dogs are scavenging through the dumped garbage and leave it scattered.

“And it’s all over the front of the house, not forgetting the occasional smell,” said the resident.

He threatened to name and shame those dumping the garbage. Mandara residents last saw a City of Harare refuse compactor about a month ago and they are resorting to composting some of the waste that can be used as compost.

“The rest we keep. When things get bad, I load the truck and look for a skip bin at the shops,” said the resident.

Residents of Wallis Road said the rubbish is also being blown to their road.

Property owners in the suburb are having to hire private companies to collect garbage in the face of the collapsing waste management at the City of Harare.

Others questioned why they have to pay council for refuse collection if council is not providing the service.

Other residents blamed their legislator Mr Tendai Biti (MDC Alliance) for not doing what he was voted in power for by residents of Harare East.

“Our area falls under Biti.

“He is too busy with his other interests to actually do anything that he was voted in to do,” said another Mandara resident.

Mr Biti won the Harare East seat in the 2018 harmonised elections. He and five other MDC Alliance were recalled by a faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but were reinstated by the High Court.

But the reinstatement has been put on ice after Mr Benjamin Rukanda of the PDP appealed against the High Court ruling.
