HARARE residents are concerned with the continued deterioration in service delivery despite relentless efforts to engage service providers.
The disgruntlement by residents in poor service delivery prompted them to convene a meeting in Harare with service providers to find a lasting solution to poor service delivery.
“Our usual problems of uncollected garbage have not been addressed for so long.
“We are sitting on a health time bomb especially as we approach the rainy season. we are now afraid of water-borne diseases such as typhoid,” said residents who spoke to ZBC News.
The chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Organisation Association of Residents Trust, Shalvar Chikomba said the Harare City Council’s billing system needs to be revisited as a matter of urgency.
“It is not a secret that there is massive corruption at Harare City Council. The billing system is not clear. Residents are being overcharged,” said Chikomba.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has since engaged the local authority on nitty gritties surrounding corruption and administrative issues.
“We have said it is better to prevent corruption than to correct it. As such we have engaged Harare city council in particular on issues to do with procurement because that is where corruption is emanating from,” said Dr Munyaradzi Magiga, ZACC’s Prevention and Corporate Governance manager.
The Harare City Council is yet to provide a satisfactory explanation after the 2020 Auditor General’s report unearthed missing funds to the tune of US$190 million that were unaccounted for in the council’s books of accounts. – ZBC News
