Fatally assaulting lover backfires

TRAGEDY struck in Mt Pleasant when a man allegedly assaulted his lover on suspicion of cheating, resulting in her untimely death.

Harare Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza has confirmed the case and said they were investigating the matter and searching for the suspect, Spencer Muvhimi (42) to answer to murder charges.

He said on February 17, 2024 around 7pm, Muvhimi and the deceased Dadirai Chapera (48) were shopping at Bond Shopping Centre in Mt Pleasant.

“However, the situation took a dark turn when Chapera received a call from a man identified as Victor.

“In a heated exchange that ensued, Muvhimi accused Chapera of being unfaithful and going out with Victor.

“Witnesses provided disturbing accounts, stating that Muvhimi forcefully grabbed Chapera by her dress on the chest, brutally assaulted her with clenched fists to her face and callously dragged her across rough surfaces while tightly gripping her right hand.

“Severely injured, Chapera was immediately rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital by a relative.

“Tragically, she passed away a week later on the 24th of February 2024, around 2am,” said Insp Chakanza.

Insp Chakanza has emphasised the importance of individuals seeking peaceful and non-violent means to resolve their differences, as resorting to violence only leads to tragedy and loss.

“This case serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of domestic violence, highlighting the need for continued support systems and interventions to prevent such devastating outcomes.

“It is crucial for society to address the issue of domestic violence and raise awareness about the importance of healthy relationships and conflict resolution.

“Only by promoting respect, understanding and non-violence can we hope to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future,” he said.
