JTL Equipment Pvt Ltd is currently carrying out road works on Emmerson Mnangagwa Road (formerly Enterprise Road) and Arcturus Road in Highlands under the second phase of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2).

Suburban observed road signs warning motorists and other road users that some road works were being carried out on the two roads.

This reporter also noticed that JTL Equipment had put filter lanes on the two roads prior to the Christmas and New Year holidays.

In an interview, City of Harare acting spokesperson, Mr Innocent Ruwende said the ED Mnangagwa Road is being rehabilitated by a private contractor under the second phase of the ERRP.

“It is among the city’s roads that we have contracted (a private company to work on) under ERRP2,” he said.

Mr Ruwende said some of the roads that are expected to be repaired will be done by the Ministry and Transport and Infrastructural Development while others will be done by the City of Harare and private contractors.

Ward 8 caretaker Councillor Euginia Chipfiwa on Tuesday told Suburban that JTL Equipment is the private contractor that had been hired to carry out repairs on ED Mnangagwa Road and Arcturus Road.

Government recently completed the reconstruction of Prince Edward and Connaught Roads in the northern suburb of Kensington as part of its ongoing countrywide road rehabilitation programme.

Residents of Ward 7 applauded Government for the road works as they said it has made the roads a pleasure to drive on.

Sam Nujoma Extension also in Ward 7 is also expected to have overlays done on the major road this month.

Last year, the authorities earmarked to improve the junction on Lomagundi Road (now called Nemakonde) and Harare Drive at a cost of US$48 800, 00 under ERRP Phase 1 and 2 funding.

Filter lanes will be added to Kirkman Road (now called Solomon Mujuru) and Harare Drive and the widening on lanes on Kirkman Road at a cost of US$120 000.

This will be done under phase three of the ERRP this year.

Filter lanes and space that will make the roundabout bigger are expected to be added on the Harare Drive and Mutare Road roundabout.

The project’s cost is US$1 250 000 and will be included in ERRP’s Phase 3 this January.

Filter lanes are expected to be added to the Westgate roundabout on Lomagundi Road this year at a cost of US$280 000 under ERRP’s phase three.

Widening of Kirkman Road in Mabelreign and Alpes Road in Borrowdale will also be carried out this year at a cost of US$6 175 000, 00 and US$4 125 000,00 respectively.

The projects will be carried out under ERRP2 Phase 3 budget.

Traffic lights will be installed on Harare Drive and Arcturus Roads, ED Mnangagwa and Ridgeway South and Mutare and Donnybrook Roads.

Harare Drive and Gaydon Road intersection was listed among those needing traffic lights but since a roundabout was already built, the money will be allocated to other roads.

Last year, acting Harare mayor Councillor Stewart Mutizwa told journalists that council had been allocated RTGS$400m for road rehabilitation under devolution funds.
