The new traffic lights at the intersection of Crowhill and Borrowdale roads are now working following the intervention of residents through the Borrowdale Ratepayers and Residents Association (BRRA) who ensured the pre-commissioning work was completed.

Through the BRRA, residents last week pooled resources and painted road markings, a pre-commissioning requirement at a busy traffic light-controlled intersection.

Plans are underway to extend the work to other suburbs in Ward 18.

The traffic lights are working now although there are still synchronisation and timing issues.

As a result of lack of road markings, the traffic lights at the junction of Crowhill and Borrowdale roads could not be commissioned until the residents — through their association — took the matter into their own hands to assist the City of Harare (COH) commission the new traffic lights.

Residents were worried with the heavy congestion at the intersection during morning and evening peak periods and saw it fit to play their part to quicken the flow of traffic.

The BRRA will also do road markings on the intersections of Addington and Kingsmead roads, Whitwell and Borrowdale roads, at Helensvale Total, Spar Helensvale and at The Heritage School.

BRRA committee member Mrs Pat Townsend said following the successful completion of the road markings at the T-junction at Crowhill Road and Borrowdale Road, the residents’ association now aims to extend the initiative to other busy intersections in Ward 18.

“We are grateful to all the residents who came together and contributed. This project is a success because of them. As an association we now aim to extend this initiative to other roads in the different (Ward 18) suburbs. We are looking at starting with roads like the Addington and Kingsmead intersection and Whitwell Road and Borrowdale Road intersections for now,” she said.

“It was great being controlled by traffic lights at the Crowhill Road and Borrowdale Road intersection. From what I hear, it’s still work in progress but we commend the awesome work done for the community. Mrs Pat Townsend, thank you once again for leading us through such illustrious work. You continue to be our beacon of success.

“To all those who contributed and those still to in cash and in kind, well done. We are the change we want to see and Borrowdale, through BRRA, will be a shining example of a prosperous community,” commented a happy resident of Ward 18.

The BRRA executive has thanked all the residents who have contributed so far while they are carrying on with the fundraising efforts so that they can also redo the road markings on the Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road intersection.

The Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road intersection is also one of the major and busy intersections in the northern suburbs.

The BRRA executive said they are aiming to continue with the initiative and if other communities want their intersections done, they should not hesitate to get in touch with the residents’ association’s leadership.

BRRA will provide advice while the communities will have to take over the fundraising.
