INSTALLATION and repairs of street lights are currently underway in Ward 41 in Marlborough covering more than 25 roads in a project which started on Friday last week.

A council official, Engineer Calvin Chigariro confirmed the development and encouraged residents to carefully identify key roads that need attention.

“We have areas which did not have lighting infrastructure for years, developers were not expected to provide the service but they would just pay 5 percent of the cost of establishing public lighting. Arising from that we now have a backlog, going as far back as 20 years, so now residents have to identify key areas that needs the available lighting infrastructure and repairs,” said Engineer Chigariro.

The roads that the residents have selected include Lomagundi, the corner of West Road in Avondale West, Churchill Drive and Elizabeth Windsor in Marlborough, Colchester Road and Rotherham Road in Avonlea and Mukwa Drive in Westgate.

In an update to residents, Mrs Kudzai Kadzombe, who is being used as a communication channel between the residents and council, said the installation of and repairs of street lights had started ahead of the rainy season to improve visibility.

“Council has received a consignment of lighting materials and equipment and I can confirm that they started repairs on the 1st of October. They are looking at doing 25 streets in our ward, and I feel it has to be shared amongst all the suburbs which are Tynwald North, Westgate, Bluff Hill, Area D, Goodhope, Willow Creek, Emerald Hill, Avonlea, Ashbrittle, Marlborough, New Adylin and Redroofs.

“The rainy season is upon us and this is an opportunity to light up those few roads, if we can get volunteers who can go the extra mile to list how many lights are in the proposed roads and how many are not working it would make the whole exercise faster,” said Mrs Kadzombe, a former councillor for Ward 41.
