IN A continued commendable display of community initiative and service, two Mt Pleasant residents Mr Andrew Brown and Mrs Debbie Swales are fostering ahead with their programme to repair roads in the suburb.

Over the past three years, the two community leaders have been actively involved in patching potholes, painting road markings, constructing speed humps and installing road signs as well as undertaking various other maintenance tasks to improve the quality of the roads in the area.

The duo, whose dedication to their community is exemplary and a worthy cause, started with just one helper, a hoe and a wheelbarrow, have made significant progress in their efforts.

They have been able to fund the maintenance work through a combination of contributions from the community, their own pockets and the support of Brown Engineering, a local company.

Mrs Swales supervises the work ensuring that the repairs are carried out as per expected standards.

Their maintenance work extends beyond patching pothole. The community leaders also clear storm water drains, pick litter along the roads, paint speed humps and pedestrian crossings, plant trees as well as enhancing the overall condition and safety of the roads in Mt Pleasant.

“We are determined to improve our community and ensure that our roads are in good condition. It is a never-ending task, but we are dedicated to making a difference,” said Mrs Swales.

The team currently consists of four staff members who work five days a week, diligently carrying out the maintenance tasks. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they have gained the support and appreciation of the local residents who benefit from the road repairs and maintenance of storm water drains.

The community leaders have also been actively engaging with the relevant authorities, including the City of Harare through its department of works and the town planning department to address issues related to road infrastructure and advocate for proper planning and development in Mt Pleasant.

Mrs Swales and Mr Brown’s commitment to improving the roads and advocating for responsible development in their neighbourhood serves as an inspiring example of grassroots action and community leadership.
