The prestigious race is scheduled for next month on May 7, 2022 at the Borrowdale Park and Racecourse.

The Castle Tankard race was not held in the past two years following a suspension of all sporting activities as part of measures by the Government to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A total of 13 runners will mark the return of the Castle Tankard race.

The event is sponsored by Delta Beverages through their leading beer brand Castle Lager.

Delta is sponsoring the event to the tune of US$50 000 and this will be the 62nd edition of the race with 13 horses battling for honours.

Delta Lagers general manager Tichafa Rinomhota hailed the Mashonaland Turf Club for the race and pledged continued support for the sport.

“The Castle Tankard is the most prestigious and sought after title by horse owners, trainers and jockeys in Zimbabwe while also commanding the interest and participation of the same from across the region,” he said.

“Preparations are underway and the whole country is invited to join.

‘‘It will be a fun filled day of premium horse racing, shared moments with friends, ice cold Castle Lager beers and entertainment,” said Rinomhota.

Delta Lagers marketing manager Kundai Mawema said only horses born in Zimbabwe are allowed to race on the day.

“Horses born in Zimbabwe will race against each other even if they are based in South Africa or any other country,” Mawema said.

The Castle Tankard race is one of the oldest sponsored horse races in Zimbabwe having started 1960.

The Castle Tankard has and continues to be the only grade one horse racing event in the country.
