The Borrowdale Ratepayers and Residents Association (BBRA) has embarked on a water harvesting project at the Borrowdale District Office where it intends to harvest water from the office’s large roof during the rainy season.

If successful the project will provide water to the district office, the workshop and the clinic for an estimated seven months if there is a good rain season.

In this light BRRA is appealing to residents to help fundraise money to buy water tanks ahead of the rain season for use to harvest the water.

In an interview on Tuesday, BRRA secretary Ms Jo Ann Ross pleaded with the residents to help them harvest the rain water from the large roof areas of the council workshop.

This should provide water for the district office which is on a hill and not receiving water, (like many residents in the area) over the years. Currently the office staff have to bring buckets of water in their cars for the toilets.

“The plan is that when the rains come, the drain pipes, with a filter at the top would flow into the three tanks and water could be collected from there. We are appealing to all Borrowdale residents to help us fundraise for three water tanks and filters to put at the Borrowdale District Office workshop, so we can start the process of water harvesting ahead of the coming rainy season. It would not be suitable for drinking but for toilets and other needs, it would be an essential commodity,” she said.

Many parts of Borrowdale have not received water for close to 20 years and that includes the district office and the workshop. The clinic receives water from one of the licensed suppliers and although several attempts have been made to sink a borehole, even in the grounds at Greystone Park School, initiated by Harare North Member of Parliament Mr Allan Markham, they have failed to find any water.
