In a startling new twist to criminal tactics, Tatenda Mutekiwa (28), a local fuel dealer, fell victim to a carefully orchestrated robbery in Avondale, Harare, on Monday.

The incident occurred at 9pm when his vehicle was deliberately rear-ended by the robbers’ car, creating a makeshift accident scene that facilitated the subsequent robbery.

Harare Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Julius Chakanza confirmed the incident and provided details.

“The complainant, Tatenda Mutekiwa was driving along Derby Road in Avondale when his car was unexpectedly hit from behind by a black Honda Fit.

“Upon exiting his vehicle to assess the damage, he was confronted by four adult males who emerged from the Honda Fit.

“The assailants immediately launched a brutal assault on him, using unidentified weapons.

“Amidst the chaos, one of the attackers seized the opportunity to steal Mutekiwa’s satchel lying on his car seat containing US$27,300-00 in cash.

“The assailants quickly fled the scene in their waiting vehicle, leaving Mutekiwa incapacitated on the ground.

“Fortunately, both his injuries and the damages to his vehicle were minimal,” he said.

Insp Chakanza said investigations are currently underway and appealed to the public for any information that can assist in apprehending the suspects.

In light of this incident, Insp Chakanza issued a warning to the general public, advising against carrying large sums of money while on the move.

He said it appears that the robbers had prior knowledge of Mutekiwa’s activities and had been tailing him before orchestrating the deliberate accident.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that criminals are constantly evolving their methods, necessitating increased awareness and precautionary measures from the public.
