HARARE this week commissioned new equipment and vehicles to improve service delivery and below is what residents had to say:

Well done   SDLG is a good brand. Please follow maintenance schedules for those machines Tatenda Machangu

Well done guys. Rome wasn’t built in a day. We will get there. My plea, if you could attend to potholes along Simon Mazorodze, especially the area from around Zindoga all the way to the ZBC. It’s a matter of time before we record fatalities. They are now very deep and dangerously positioned. Kindly attend to that Pardie Gotora

**********

Thank you for the good job keep it up but we are crying for water in Glen Norah please help the residents before cholera and typhoid hit the people thank you. Munyaradzi Maunde

**********

Well done but your water and refuse charges do not mean anything. Donald Stevens

**********

I pray that those machines won’t be destroying anyone’s home this rainy season. Tsickson Mazorodze

**********

When are you going to put road markings? Tapuwa N Chakanetsa

**********

The road markings are not being done properly. I will give examples of two roads Seke Road and King George. The markings could contribute to accidents. They need people who know how to do proper markings to be on the ground. Otherwise wrongly marked roads are a ticking time bomb Momoh Tee Mandi

Can you imagine two weeks no water Karen Achihoro Rugara

**********

Six motorcycles, is that what you call recapitalisation? Brenda Tinashe

**********

Busy replacing earth movers when the current ones haven’t worked that much. You’re investing in the wrong things. Will these work for the benefit of the citizens? What’s your plan with the non-working robots? Why can’t you patch those deep potholes in the midst of the CBD? Harare City Council is far from being competent Tendai Dzenga

**********

After few weeks all these vehicles will disappear and another inquiry will sit to dig into their disappearance. You guys are pathetic. When council purchased state of the art pothole sealing trucks, where have those trucks disappeared to? Not one has been spotted Titan Khan

**********

You are spot on they can’t clear rubbish in our residential areas because they don’t have the trucks. Where is that big fleet which was bought a few years ago?  Chipo Takawira

**********

Developments these days are only on Facebook sending pictures. That equipment you are going to develop your stands in Glen Lorne. People must learn to develop their life not waiting for this. Lovemore Vengesai

How useful is a piece of new equipment without corresponding large quantities of raw materials for the machine to work with?

The machinery will simply be underutilised, a white elephant at best.

Why spend scarce resources to purchase an expensive and oversize frontend loader to do work that can be done using smaller and more affordable equipment?

My point is, Harare City’s sole supplier of stone aggregates, is presently incapable of scaling up production of stone aggregates to warranty spending outrageous amounts on white elephant (equipment).

The machinery looks too grand to be of any practical use, given the inefficiency or inability of the council to sort out or fix the other side of their responsibility.

For example, the responsibility to ensure that abundant supply of cheap raw materials such as stone aggregates is readily available.

In high density areas potholes are being stuffed with mashanga echibage, broken bricks or any form of material that can be found because Harare Quarry is failing to do what it is supposed to do, that is supply the city with adequate stone aggregates.

Those are the kind of problems that I expect the Mayor and councillors to find solutions to and rectify them.

Otherwise, with the cash you used to purchase that lot of equipment and machinery, with due respect, other people will do a better job.

New vehicles and motorcycles to be used on potholed and dilapidated roads is tantamount to throwing cash into an abyss.

Let’s get our priorities right and fix the roads first.

Instead, the council needs to address quarry production issues first and foremost and scale up production so that it can have at its disposal plentiful supply of cheap raw materials to fix all the roads in the city, be it in the low or high density suburbs.

It’s progress in the right direction but let’s be more realistic, much more needs to be done. These are just superficial achievements.

It would be nice to see tangible and meaningful development coupled with short and medium term well thought out strategic development plans.

Your strategy on how you can solve the unavailability of crucial raw materials with which to patch up the potholes and repair the dilapidated roads.

What ideas and plans do you have to get us residents from this sad state of affairs. Let it not just be about funds. We expect leadership with ideas and solutions. John Musa

Please maintain your equipment and who ever uses those bakkies should use them responsibly Nanette Allmark
