The 2020 National Junior Champs took place at Chisipite Senior School in Harare on Saturday and Sunday with more than 200 young swimmers from Harare, Matabeleland, Mashonaland Country Districts, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces turning up for the event.
Spectators were treated to some good performances by the young swimmers who displayed great sportsmanship.
Harare dominated both the women’s and men’s competitions as its swimmers scored the highest points in their races.
Matabeleland won the Danes Trophy for the team with the most points per swimmer.
The Matabeleland Junior Team 2020 came second in both the women’s and men’s competitions while the Mashonaland Country Districts women and men’s teams were placed third followed by the Masvingo Province teams.
The Manicaland Province teams anchored both the women’s and men’s tables of points.
Ten-year-old Sibusiso Fayayo emerged as one of the top swimmers from Matabeleland as he came first in his age group individual scores taking 29 points ahead of Harare’s Jayden Mangunda and his Matabeleland teammate Niel Jones who both had 23 points each.
“Huge kudos to Zanele Nkomazana, the head of the Local Organising Committee, and her team, for a superbly organised event.
The weather was good, the 200 plus swimmers were superb and the supporters enjoyed a great display of good sportsmanship from the participants.
The Danes trophy for the team with the most points per swimmer (team scores divided by number of swimmers in the team) was won by Matabeleland in the closest competition in recent years,” SwimZim said in a statement on their website.
