Some residents of Ward 16 have gone for a month without running water and are desperate for water, which has become scarce in their taps.

A resident of Ward 16 from Zambezi Flats said; “Five weeks without water, it’s no joke. And considering that we stay at flats, you can imagine how the situation is.”

Another resident who is also a member of the Ward 16 Development Committee said they have gone for four weeks without water and they are considering not paying their water bills.

“It is near impossible to bring up the issue of payments as the situation stands.

“The cost of electricity for the good Samaritans bringing us water borders on criminal.

“Please we need the water,” he said.

Other residents said they were planning to give council a taste of their own medicine by not paying their bills.

“The water situation is very bad and council is not responding to let the residents know.

“Maybe council would like a taste of their own bitter medicine when residents withhold payment for the few services left,” said a resident of Ward 16.

An engineer from the City of Harare’s department of water on Monday said Ward 16 was supposed to have pumped water last Friday but there was a serious pipe burst on the main lines from Morton Jaffray Waterworks.

“We managed to fix the burst but also one of our pumps broke down yesterday and our guys are working on it.

“As soon as it is running, we will start pumping at Avondale,” he said.

Residents also expressed concern over the state of roads such as Lauchlan Road and Clavering Avenue.

“A week ago, one of our residents expressed concern about the state of the section of Lauchlan extending into Clavering.

“Yes indeed it is bad, even when you go towards Haig Park School, 73rd Avenue included.

“I think it is as bad right down to Harare Drive.

“I have also complained about this situation.

“On Friday I went to see council officials and they told me that council has no tar throughout Harare.

“For now thinking about tar is like crying for the moon,” said a resident of the ward.
