A resident of Lyndhurst Lane in Strathaven is complaining about a ditch near his property left unattended for two months following a burst pipe.

The resident said council workers came to repair the burst pipe but the problem has resurfaced.

“They did (attend to the problem) once but the problem resurfaced after two days.

“They never came back,” said the Strathaven resident.

According to the resident, the council workers are failing to repair the burst pipe because they do not have fuel to drive to the site.

The Strathaven resident said the council workers dug a big trench outside his security wall after reporting the burst pipe.

The trench, according to the resident, fills up with water when it is available and nearby residents fetch water from that ditch.

“It has been almost two months since they left it like that. They keep saying diesel issues but imagine what’s going to happen when it rains. This is a danger to them (the residents fetching water) and a security risk to my property,” said the Strathaven man.

In a related matter, council has also failed to attend to a blocked drain at the corner of Wicklow and Sussex Roads in Avondale West.

A property owner living near the intersection, Mrs Ivy Kumira, said council abandoned the problem after it was reported in Suburban in October last year.

“They abandoned the problem after it was reported in Suburban without repairs. This is a perennial problem known by Mr Marodza (from the City of Harare) and other council authorities.

“When the problem started, I made several calls reporting it. When nothing was done, I visited Engineer Mutimukulu who was the director of works who assured me his officers will work on it.

“When he left, I engaged authorities but all in vain. Later on, I also dealt with a Mr Dube and a Mr Sahondo and all was in Marodza’s eyes. At a certain point, some workers were sent, they dug up trenches only to cover them up without solving the problem.

“I also provided food to those workers after they asked me (for the food).”

She said the problem started in 2013 but remains unresolved eight years later.

Mrs Kumira fears that flooding will occur when the rains start.

“Flooding doesn’t occur outside my yard only but the whole of the inside of my property,” she said.
