MOTORISTS have been warned to be alert when approaching the Borrowdale Road and Whitwell intersection as well as the Whitwell and Teviotdale intersection because smash and grab thieves are back in operation at the two junctions.

A security alert circulated in residents’ social media groups warned motorists to be always alert when approaching these two intersections as a number of smash and grab incidents were recorded on Thursday night last week.

“Motorists are warned to be extra alert around the Borrowdale/Whitwell and Whitwell/Teviotdale intersections. There were a number of smash and grabs at the Borrowdale Road end on Thursday night and the thieves usually move between the two intersections,” read the security alert.

The alert gave motorists a number of tips to protect themselves and their property at the two intersections which are known hotspots for smash and grabs. The thieves smash the car windows and grab any valuables such as cellphones, laptops, wallets, bags and handbags on the seats or the dashboard.

Motorists can avoid becoming a victim by:

* Do not leave any bags, packages, baskets, etc. in plain view.

*  Lock valuables such as laptop computers and handbags in the boot.

* If the robot is red, approach slowly so that it changes to green before you have to come to a stop.

* Report any incidents to Borrowdale Police Station.

* Share this warning with whoever you feel will benefit from the heads up.
