MABELREIGN residents have expressed concern over Sherwood Golf Club that has been turned into a haven for social ills such as drug peddling.
Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission chairperson, Ms Fungayi Jessy Majome, who is a resident of the suburb, exposed the rot when she appeared before the Harare Commission of Inquiry this week.
“Sherwood Golf Club, a community facility, used to be a golf club,” she said.
“The Harare City Council runs and controls the club house. However, the Harare City Council has been leasing out the premises.
“What used to be a golf club is now essentially a night club and is being used as an open live joint and every week, musicians play amplified music, there is serious drug peddling and sex business, thus inconveniencing the whole neighbourhood.”
Ms Majome said when their residents association approached the said lessee, Mr Briggs Bomba, he told them that he was allowed to run a bar at the premises to recoup his money after saving the property from being attached by former staff members.
“We asked him to show us the lease agreement in 2020 and he refused until this day,” she said.
“We went to Rowan Martin Building and approached the city council and we were told by the estate files department that the estate file was missing, there were no documents related to that property.”
