The Rotary Club of Harare North took significant steps towards enhancing the beauty of their community last Friday through organising a clean-up at Pomona Shopping Centre.
The clean-up aimed to support Government’s calls to create clean environments and complement recent infrastructural developments in the area.
In collaboration with the Mt Pleasant District Office, the Rotary Club mobilised community members to clean Pomona Shopping Centre and extended the clean-up campaign to Pendennis Shopping Centre in Mt Pleasant, Groombridge Shopping Centre and Ashbrittle Shopping Centre.
Participants from various local organisations including the Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe and TM/Pick n Pay Village Walk workers took part in the clean-up.
Rotary Club of Harare North project services director Mr Cyril Moyo and the president Ms Nomhle Mujakachi, said it was important to involve communities in maintaining clean public spaces.
“As members of this vibrant city, we all have a role to play in keeping our shared spaces clean and welcoming. This is not just about picking up litter – it’s about cultivating a culture of civic engagement and collective responsibility for the state of our community,” said Mr Moyo.
The clean-up campaign is part of the Rotary Club’s flagship Monthly Clean-Up and Environmental Beautification initiative, which is in line with the national clean-up campaign President Mnangagwa introduced a few years ago to rid cities and public places of litter.
Every first Friday of each month residents and corporate organisations come together to clean their premises and surrounding areas.
In addition to the physical clean-up, the initiative also aims to educate participants on sustainable waste management practices and the environmental benefits of community stewardship.
“We are not just cleaning up our streets and parks, we are building connections, instilling pride and demonstrating the power of people coming together for the greater good,” said Mr Moyo.
Ms Mujakachi, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their recent efforts.
“I am really pleased to share some positive feedback from our recent clean-up campaigns. A fence has been put up around the open plot that was previously used for illegal dumping by Pendennis and waste bins have been added in the area,” she said.
Ms Mujakachi commended the club members and the community for their dedication to maintaining clean spaces.
