HARARE residents have commended the City of Harare for resolving to honour serving war veterans in council with residential stands.

Residents said this was long overdue and urged the local authority to go back to their old ways and even give the longest serving workers houses.

There are 132 war veterans who are serving in various council departments and some of them have no houses.

Harare residents called upon the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to implore all local authorities to follow suit and honour serving war veterans not just with residential stands but add more perks as part of the honour.

However, the residents said councils should build war veterans houses and instead of giving them undeveloped stands.

“Great move, his was maybe long overdue, but those who worked for 42 years for the city have retired by now or they are working beyond 65 or they started working at a very young age. I also wonder how they are going to develop those stands to make it a home? Maybe just build them retirement small homes,” said Arnold Chisewe.

Added Tave Timire: “A very good move. Council used to construct houses for residents. Nothing wrong if these war veterans are rewarded with a council house too.”

Residents said the scheme should be replicated in all local authorities countrywide.

“Well-done, may this be done for all the war veterans throughout the country. May all councils emulate this,” said Gorerengoni Nyabvure.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume announced the decision to reward the war veterans last week.

Speaking while conferring ranks to newly promoted officers and dog handlers at a pass-out parade held at the Harare Municipal Police headquarters, Councillor Mafume said council will offer residential stands to war veterans who have been serving since independence.

“About 132 war veterans have been working for about 42 years now but do not have a place to stay but people younger than them have stands. We are going to rectify that and make sure that those who served the country will get residential stands,” he said.
