RECONSTRUCTION of Dr Nyamutswa Road which connects Sanganai Inn in Ward 16 and Westgate suburb in Ward 41 has commenced under the Government funded Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP).

Work on the road commenced this week in a development expected to be welcome to residents of a number of suburbs in Harare West which include Westgate, Area D, Bluff Hill, Madokero and Tynwald North.

A notice to residents said the reconstruction of Dr Nyamutswa Road was likely to be underway for two or more months.

Truck operators and other informal traders conducting their activities along Dr Nyamutswa Road have been urged to vacate the area to ensure smooth operations for the contractors hired to reconstruct the road.

For a long time, in numerous feedback meetings, with the former councillors for Wards 16 and 41 Mr Denford Ngadziore and Mrs Kudzai Kadzombe as well as City of Harare officials, residents of the Westgate, Bluff Hill, Madokero and Tynwald North had been pleading for Dr Nyamutswa Road to be prioritised for reconstruction.

“From many feedback meetings the road was submitted by residents as one of the roads in our constituency to benefit from the ZINARA funds through the Emergency Rehabilitation Road Programme ERRP,” read the notice.

The City of Harare had also put the road under its reconstruction priority list.

Residents from both Ward 16 and Ward 41 immediately welcomed the development saying it was long overdue.

“Well done. It was long awaited for,” said a Ward 16 resident.

Added a Ward 41 resident: “We wish the team every success in their endeavour.”

Under the ERRP, Government has embarked on the repair of major roads in urban and rural areas.

This followed the declaration of most urban roads a state of disaster paving the way for the release of funding by Treasury to restore the roads.

A number of major roads in Harare including those in Harare West Constituency are among those earmarked for rehabilitation under the ERRP while some will undergo upgrading.

A junction upgrade is earmarked on Lomagundi Road (now called Nemakonde) and Harare Drive at a cost of US$48 800, 00 under the ERRP funding while filter lanes will be added to Kirkman Road (now called Solomon Mujuru) and Harare Drive and the widening of lanes on Kirkman Road at a cost of US$120 000.

This will be done under phase three of the ERRP in January next year.

Filter lanes are expected to be added to the Westgate roundabout on Lomagundi Road in January next year at a cost of US$280 000 under ERRP’s phase three.

Some roads in Harare have already been repaired notably Boshoff Drive in Sunningdale from the corner of Seke Road cutting through Sunningdale, Pangula Road in Harare East which is the access road to Chikurubi Prison, Cranborne West Road and George Road while others such as Seke Road from the corner of Cripps Road to just after Maruta shopping centre in Hatfield and Luna Road in Borrowdale are undergoing repairs right now.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development Engineer Tedious Kudzanai Chinyanga says more than 26 000 km of Zimbabwe’s road network will undergo repairs this year under the ERRP.
