POLICE in Harare have urged societies to seriously consider the safety of the girl child given the rise of sexual abuse cases.

“The spiralling increase of sexual abuses on juveniles and minors by both strangers and relatives is worrisome. May we all, as societies, take a keen interest in ensuring that they are protected from all incidents and circumstances that expose them to danger. For instance, it is not good anymore for parents to sleep in the same room with children. Neither is it wise anymore for girl children to be left in the company of males, relatives or strangers.” said Inspector Julius Luckmore Chakanza, the Harare Provincial Police Spokesperson.

During the Christmas holiday, police arrested a 39-year old Waterfalls man for raping his 15-year old biological daughter twice during his wife’s absence.

The wife had travelled to Marondera to attend a funeral leaving the complainant and four other children in the care of the accused.

The family shared one room.

On the first instance, the accused person came home late at around 2300hours    lifted the complainant who was sleeping on the floor with her siblings onto the bed and had unprotected sexual intercourse with her once.

He threatened to kill her with a knife if the matter came out.

Then, fearing further sexual abuses from the accused and yet without divulging the secret, the girl went on to ask her mother’s friend for a place to sleep overnight on Christmas Day, December 25 2022.

But the accused daringly followed her in the dead of the night and had unprotected sexual intercourse with her again before sneaking out.

The matter came to light when the girl’s mother returned home and could not get answers from her daughter when she sought explanations over some things which she found amiss on her return from the funeral.

The girl was eventually taken to hospital for medical examinations where the abuse was discovered, said Inspector Chakanza.
