THE Zimbabwe Republic Police have opened a docket against developers who have been invading the wetland off Westminster Avenue in Sentosa and the suspects can now be taken to court over their actions.

The invaders have been continually invading the wetland despite efforts by Ward 17 residents to halt the development of roads and demarcation of stands in the vlei.

The docket with reference number RRB 5997554 was opened on Thursday last week after some residents and Mabelreign district officer Mrs Jane Gambiza engaged the police to stop the development after a grader was seen at the wetland clearing land for roads and stands.

Suburban is reliably informed that some residents visited Mabelreign Police Station where they told the police just needed statements from Mrs Gambiza and residents as informants to open a docket against the owners of the grader that has been clearing land on the wetland.

Police then recorded statements from a resident Mr John Vekris as an informant and Mrs Gambiza as the district officer of Mabelreign.

The suspects can now be taken to court over their actions following the opening of the docket.

The recurring invasion of the Westminster Avenue wetland has triggered a huge outcry from residents with some calling for action to be taken against the developer.

At the wetland, which is close to a stream, two illegal boreholes have been sunk and bricks for construction have been delivered at the site.

Foundations for possible development have been trenched much to the anger of the residents who have demanded the City of Harare Mabelreign District Office should put a barrier where the alleged illegal new road to the stands branches off Westminster Avenue.

The residents have expressed sadness over the continued invasion of the wetland saying the authorities were letting them down.

Mrs Gambiza says the Westminster development has not been sanctioned by their office and they have no record of the developer whatsoever.

Ward 17 residents have expressed concern over the City of Harare’s lethargic approach to the selling of stands on a wetland in Sentosa, off Westminster Avenue. Since last year, the residents have been seeking explanations from council over the stands on the wetland but council has failed to take decisive action against the invaders who have constantly been coming back to the site to carry out construction work despite orders to stop from the municipality and the police.
