Harare West residents without national identity cards have responded in big numbers to the offer by the constituency’s Member of Parliament Ms Joana Mamombe to assist them with letters confirming they reside in the area for use when getting Covid-19 jabs at the two vaccination centres in the constituency.

On Wednesday, Ms Mamombe said due to the overwhelming response from residents she and other community leaders will continue issuing the letters even after the two-day period she had initially reserved for issuing the confirmation letters.

She encouraged residents who didn’t get a chance to see her on Tuesday and Wednesday when she was at the Marlborough Clinic and Mabelreign Satellite Clinic vaccination centres to still contact her or any other community leader for assistance to get Covid-19 jabs.

“We were at Marlborough Clinic and Mabelreign Satellite Clinic together with recalled councillors of the suburbs and other community leaders as we helped each other to assist residents without national identity cards so that they could get vaccinated. Proof of residence is required to get the letter. Please note that this is an ongoing process of giving out letters. Those who need assistance please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or any community leader,” she said.

“The response was overwhelming as we managed to assist several residents from pensioners, people living with disabilities, to those who lost their IDs and others who have never managed to get documents. While undertaking the process a council nurse tested positive for Covid-19 and they had to disinfect the clinic and stopped the vaccination process for an hour,” said Ms Mamombe.

Health workers at one of the vaccination centres go about their work as Harare West MP Joana Mamombe observes.

She paid tribute to the frontline health workers for the sterling work they are doing. The health workers said the elderly and people living with disabilities were being prioritised.

“We want to commend the good work done by the staff at the clinics. The staff at Marlborough Clinic and Mabelreign Satellite Clinic are doing a very good job including going over and above their required working hours while skipping their lunch-breaks so that they assist as many residents as possible,” she said.

“We also received complaints about residents who are waking up as early as 5am to book positions for vaccinations yet some residents from as far off as Tynwald North cannot make it that early. There is need for us to help each other come up with a working plan as a community so that residents from all suburbs in Ward 41 are prioritised at Marlborough Clinic.

“Working with local organisations, the City of Harare, Ministry of Health and Child Care, we will be intensifying our Covid-19 awareness and monitoring at Westgate roundabout. This is the area that links our constituency to the Covid-19 hotspot province, Mashonaland West,” said Ms Mamombe.
