A ROAD safety, advocacy, education and action organisation, Road Safe Zimbabwe, has restored the pedestrian crossing at David Livingstone Primary School in Harare in a move to ensure school children are safe.

Road Safe Zimbabwe has since requested Harare residents and those in other parts of Zimbabwe to give them a list of schools that urgently need restoration of their pedestrian crossings to ensure the safety of school children.

“We managed to restore the pedestrian crossing at David Livingstone Primary School.

A little step in making our streets safer for children. This is a start, so please comment below with school areas that urgently need pedestrian crossing points restored or made.

We are responsible for ensuring our kids get home safely every day.

“Do you know the lollipop man in the picture?  PastorVic (Pastor Victor Ferreira) has voluntarily dedicated seven years of his life (so far) to assisting children crossing the busy Herbert Chitepo Avenue, getting there every school day at about 5.30 in the morning to clean up the surrounding area and starting his service from as early as 6am.

“We salute him for his heroic service over the years and sacrificing his life every single time he is on that pedestrian crossing because there are some really selfish and terrible drivers on our roads

We need to roll out #SafeStreets to many other schools in Zimbabwe so please inbox us if you can help in any way, or direct us to other volunteers needing support,” Road Safe Zimbabwe said on their Facebook Page.

Some residents responded and pointed the need for pedestrian crossings at Louis Mountbaten Primary School in Belvedere and Highlands Primary School in Highlands. The residents also paid tribute to the man who has dedicated his time to helping school children cross the busy Herbert Chitepo Avenue every morning on school days.

“Thank you so much we will look at how we can help with this,” Road Safe Zimbabwe responded to a resident who suggested Highlands Primary School.

In September, residents of Harare North declared war on reckless drivers and called on authorities to put in place stiffer penalties for offenders following the death of Highlands Primary School pupil, Ceejay Maodzwa (11), who was hit by car and died while crossing the intersection of Glenara and ED Mnangagwa Road (formerly Enterprise Road) on his way to school.

There was an outpouring of grief with residents commiserating with the young boy’s family. In a related matter, the Borrowdale Ratepayers and Residents Association had to come to rescue its own community following a donation of paint to mark the pedestrian crossing at Greystone Park Primary School.
