CHEMICAL manufacturer, Nemchem, reportedly lost US$38 000 at its offices in New Ardbennie, Harare to gun-wielding robbers.

Nemchem specialises in manufacturing chemicals, contract cleaning, laundry services, pest control and fumigation, water treatment chemicals, catering and related services.

The incident occurred on June 15, 2024 at approximately 23:00 hours when the robbers scaled the precast wall of the premises in order to ambush the security guards.

Inspector Luckmore Julius Chakanza, the Harare Provincial Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident saying investigations are currently underway.

According to reports, three Fawcett guards were on duty at the Nemchem premises when seven masked and unidentified men forcefully entered the yard by cutting the razor wire on the eastern side of the premises.

“One of the assailants was armed with an unidentified pistol.

“The robbers managed to apprehend a security guard at the main gate and threatened him with a knife, demanding the panic button and the main gate remote control that were in his possession.

“The security guard complied and surrendered the items to them.

“Subsequently, they proceeded to the kitchen where they discovered another security guard,” he said.

Insp Chakanza said the assailants assaulted the security guard responsible for handling a dog who was stationed at the back of the premises.

“They ordered him to secure the dog in a kennel and forcibly marched him to join the other security guards in the kitchen.

“Using shoelaces, the robbers tied the hands of all the security guards.

“One of the assailants, armed with a firearm, stood guard over the security guards, while others climbed onto the roof of the administration offices, removed roof tiles and gained entry through the ceiling.

“Using a grinder, they cut through the strong room door and once again employing the grinder, opened two safe boxes, making off with $38 300 in cash,” he said.

Insp Chakanza said before leaving, the robbers ransacked several offices, leaving the security guards bound in the kitchen.

“Fortunately, the security guards managed to free themselves and promptly informed their superiors before notifying the police.

“The law enforcement authorities attended to the scene.

“However, no arrests or recoveries have been made at this time,” he said.

Insp Chakanza said investigations are in progress and the culprits will be brought to justice.
