MT Pleasant residents have expressed concern over the over the abstraction of water from a borehole at a property along Fairway Road in the suburb for commercial purposes.

The residents say there are two trucks, which never take a break but keep coming to load more water and delivering to clients.

The residents suspect this rampant water harnessing is the reason behind the drying up of several boreholes and wells in the area.

Residents, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals in case the water tankers belong to some politically powerful people, said the two large tankers which are always on Fairway Road loading and delivering water.

The water business extremely worries the residents.

“There is a resident who is busy selling underground water. They have two large tankers which will be loading and delivering. I am told one of the clients is (named supermarket). They are located at number 19 Fairway,” said a resident.

“The boreholes and wells in the area drying because of that particular resident. He has two big tankers time and again they come to refill, it’s not a secret. The neighbours are scared to confront or report him. I reported to council nothing was done,” said a resident.

Another resident said council told them that the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) was in charge of underground water.

“We have since reported the case to the Mt Pleasant District Office and they told us that ZINWA is in charge of underground water. We hope they will help us and get to the bottom of this issue.

‘‘For now, the selling of water continues with impunity besides the information given,” said the resident.

The Mt Pleasant district officer Mrs Marian Mverechena acknowledged that the residents had raised concerns over the bulk water supplier in question. However, she said the district office will refer the matter to ZINWA which is responsible for underground water.

“Residents approached the district office seeking help over a bulk water supplier they feel is over doing it and they fear that if not attended to underground water in the area may dry up. ZINWA is responsible for underground water so we urge the residents to approach the water body and we will also do what we can to help the residents,” said Mrs Mverechena.
