In a deeply disturbing incident that took place in Meyrick Park, Harare recently, a ruthless man deceived a teen girl with the promise of a part-time domestic job and a dollar before raping her.

The identity of the perpetrator remains unknown and law enforcement authorities are actively conducting a search to apprehend him.

The victim, a 16-year-old girl who suffers from a health condition, resides with her mother. Her condition has significantly impacted her mental well-being.

Inspector Julius Chakanza, Harare Provincial Police spokesperson expressed strong condemnation of the incident and assured the public that the police are tirelessly working to apprehend the culprit and bring him to justice.

According to Insp Chakanza, the incident occurred on May 13, 2024 at around 10am.

“The victim’s 45-year-old mother had left her alone at home to go to work at a local school.

“During this time, the girl decided to visit her pastor’s house in Meyrick Park.

“While on her way, she encountered a man who took advantage of her condition and offered her a housecleaning job, coaxing her to accompany him to his residence.

“Once at the man’s house, he persisted in attempting to engage in sexual intercourse with the girl despite her refusal.

“To further manipulate the victim, the man enticed her with a dollar before proceeding to engage in unprotected sexual intercourse with her.

“After the assault, the victim returned home,” he said.

Insp Chakanza said when she returned home her mother and neighbours noticed that she had some goodies and they became curious to know the source of the money.

“Upon her arrival, her mother and female neighbours noticed that she was carrying two packets of biscuits, prompting them to inquire about the source of the money used for the purchase. During the ensuing conversation, the victim bravely disclosed the abuse she had endured. The victim’s mother accompanied her to ZRP Mabelreign (Police Station) where an official report was filed and the victim was then escorted to Parirenyatwa Hospital to undergo a medical examination.

“The sad incident highlights the need for keeping vulnerable people under watch to prevent them from falling victim to sexual abuse,” said Insp Chakanza.
