Ward 17 residents in Harare are growing increasingly concerned about the deteriorating state of the Avondale stream, which passes through Kensington and marks the boundary of the ward where it crosses Bishop Gaul Avenue.

The once serene stream has transformed into a thick forest, harbouring suspicious and potentially dangerous activities, including illegal dumping and movements into the deep gorge.

The Avondale stream, also known as the Marimba River, has long been a source of pride for the community. However, the neglect it has suffered in recent years has resulted in a significant decline in its condition, causing distress among residents.

The overgrown vegetation has created a thicket and fears of criminal activities such as drug and substance abuse as well as the brewing of illicit beer have added to the concerns.

Residents are now calling upon the City of Harare to intervene and restore sanity to the area. They are urging the local authority to clear the stream and investigate the nature of the dumping that has taken place in the deep gorge.

The accumulation of waste not only poses environmental hazards but also raises questions about potential criminal activities that may be taking place within the forested area.

Ward 17 Ratepayers and Residents Association (W17RRA) chairperson Mr Obert Francis Munyaradzi spoke to Suburban about the residents’ concerns for the safety and well-being of the community.

“The Avondale stream has become a hotbed for illegal activities, and it is imperative that the City of Harare takes immediate action.

“We cannot allow our neighbourhood to be plagued by these suspicious movements and the dumping of waste. Our residents deserve a safe and clean environment,” he said.

Ward 17 residents emphasised the need for urgent action to clear the Avondale stream and restore its natural beauty.

“W17RRA stands united in its determination to work alongside the authorities to address these concerns and create a better living environment,” said Mr Munyaradzi.
