Harare residents deserve a salute

Suburban

HARARE residents should be commended for the community work that they are doing in their various suburbs which is helping in filling the service delivery gap created as a result of an incapacitated city council.

Residents are going as far as repairing roads and refuse collection trucks, cleaning up rivers, shopping centres, public places and recreational parks.

The capital city should be grateful for having such an industrious citizenry who do not fold their hands while waiting for the authorities to do something.

One such resident is Mrs Debbie Swales who single handedly embarked on project “Magnificent Mt Pleasant” with the objective of restoring Mt Pleasant back to its glamourous state as a clean and beautiful suburb.

She has since been joined by other selfless residents and companies in her effort. It has been a year now since Mrs Swales embarked on this noble initiative and the results are there for all to see and draw inspiration from.

Her work ranges from cleaning up the environment, fixing road signs, road infrastructure and pothole patching.

We pay tribute to Mrs Swales for her amazing attitude. Narrating her year-long project, the Mt Pleasant resident said she got tired of waiting for the City of Harare to do something about the suburb’s infrastructure, natural findings such as rivers and open spaces.

Rubbish was piling up in the suburb to the detriment of the environment as some of the litter was being dumped on a small river in the suburb. Uncut grass was blocking road users’ vision as well pedestrian and cyclists’ paths while road signs were no longer identifiable exposing motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to dangers of accidents.

Determined to get these anomalies fixed, Mrs Swales embarked on project “Magnificent Mt Pleasant” and other concerned citizens and corporates joined her effort to help revive the allure of Mt Pleasant.

Mrs Swales and her partner’s efforts have been centred around The Chase down to Twickenham Road and on the other side between Arundel High School to Alpes Road. She has been a resident of Mt Pleasant for the past 12 years and says it pained her to see the suburb deteriorate into a cesspit of rubbish and unkempt roadsides.

Her initiative has now seen the employment of two casual workers who get materials from Brown Engineering run by Mr Andrew Brown to patch potholes. The area around the bridge on Bargate Road which spans the Gwebi River has since been cleaned and birds can now come to feed, drink water and breed.

A fence has been erected to prevent litterbugs from tossing their rubbish into the river while another worker has been hired to patrol the place to deter the litterbugs.

Refuse Collection Services has been helping transport the litter picked by Mrs Swales and her team to Pomona dumpsite while Electrosales and Astra Paints have provided paint for road signs.
