The Greendale Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) held its annual general meeting on Saturday where seven members were voted into the body’s new executive committee while nine others will sit on the GRRA board.

The new executive committee elected at the AGM is made up of  Iona Bartosz, Gail Cooper, Godwin Kanongovere, Joshua Laubscher, Nonhlanhla Ndhlovu Magwala, Tutsirai Makuvachuma, Mike Mataure and also includes Mr Lovemore Chivaura and Mr Dalubuhle Sibanda who are on the 2024 GRRA board.

Speaking at the AGM before the election of the new committee held at Abbeys Preparatory School in Greendale, GRRA vice-chairperson Mr Tinashe Hwindingwi said the current committee will be stepping down and encouraged residents to be part of the board and of the community.

“We believe it is a lot of experience. A lot of people with insight can contribute and participate in Greendale activities,” he said.

Mr Hwindingwi said the new committee members were voted in by paid up members.

He said Mr Chivaura, one of the remaining members from the outgoing committee will act as a key point person.

“We also have got one person who is not around, Mr Sibanda, he handles the online happenings.

“Don’t let him go,” said Mr Hwindingwi.

He urged the new committee members to support each other.

“This is not going to be easy to relay all the issues that you have to address but I have to believe this is a fresh new crew, fresh new perspectives.

“If they don’t get your support, not much can be done.

“We have experienced that.

“We have had a lot of pushback and we have taken on that pushback but that’s part of the job,” said Mr Hwindingwi.

He said serving on the GRRA was a voluntary task.

“This is not a paying salary job, this is volunteering work. If you demand much, be able to match that,” he said.

Mr Hwindingwi encouraged residents, businesses and the entire community to work together.

“No one else is coming to save us. City of Harare is doing what it can, Government is doing what it can but frankly your neighbour, your street, your committees that’s your fall back plan.

“We are about the community.

“I really encourage you to support each other, support your street.

“It doesn’t have to be in a big way but a small way, but support nonetheless,” he said.

Mr Hwindingwi said the new GRRA chairman, vice chair and secretary and finance person will be voted in at the next GRRA meeting.

Speaking at the same occasion, Ward 9 Councillor Prince Mutebuka congratulated the new board members of GRRA and GRRA committee members for a smooth process in the transfer of leadership.

“We are living in difficult times, the city is in a crisis.

“I hear the passion, I hear the anger from the members, from the streets and I think us as the committee for residents, we need to step up and be at the forefront and try to solve some of the pertinent issues that the society is facing.

“And I want to pledge my support as the councillor, I am bringing in the whole of council, everything that is in my power so that we work together and mobilise residents, business and youths to make sure we find solutions to the things happening in our society.

“There are a lot of projects mentioned here; the Greengrove Nature Reserve, Greendale clinic, roads, we should also be seized with these issues,” he said.

Cllr Mutebuka said he is happy that Mr Chivaura has been retained from the outgoing community as it is important for continuity.

“I am also happy that we have young people now in the committee.

“They bring fresh ideas and we will be able to move forward and achieve our goals,” he said.
