RESIDENTS of Greendale along Coronation Avenue recently raised money to repair a burst water pipe that was affecting water supplies in the area.

The residents raised US$55 to have part of the pipe replaced instead of replacing the whole pipe as more bursts are expected during the rainy season which might mean residents will have to raise more money to fix other parts of the pipes.

Greendale has been experiencing erratic water supplies due to burst water pipes blamed on ageing. The old pipes have not been replaced for a number of decades.

Mr Nigel Mugamu  who was responsible for coordinating the fundraising initiative  said they saw it fit to raise money to have the pipes fixed instead of spending more money buying water from bulk water suppliers.

“We receive water on Saturday, Sunday and Monday then supplies are cut off so we had a situation where there were two burst pipes along Coronation Avenue but they have been fixed.

“It is cheaper to come together and raise money and buy whatever is needed for the pipes to be fixed so that everyone receives water.  We do not crowd fund to pay the (council) plumber because their request is not about money but to have the problem rectified. We managed to raise the $US55 needed to buy the items for the plumber, a  Mr Shaiso and his team.

“The items were used last Friday to fix the burst pipe along Coronation. We were not able to raise the full US$100 and therefore we were not able to replace the entire pipe. Instead, Mr Shaiso and his team replaced part of the pipe and bought some fittings for the job.”

Mr Mugami said the funds raised by the community were not used to pay Mr Shaiso and his team but were used to purchase the items they needed and used to fix the problem.

“I spoke to Mr Shaiso about the water and the pressure. The low pressure relates to the actual water supply. In recent weeks, the city council has been struggling with the actual water supply. The water supply was better last weekend but clearly not good enough,” he said.

Council has been making endless efforts to have all burst pipes in Greendale repaired to ensure that residents get constant water supply.

The initiative by residents followed complaints by those living along Metcalf Road and Coronation Avenue about a burst water pipe where treated council water was gushing to waste for the past seven months with the local authority failing to repair the problem.
