Govt receives letter recalling Harare councillors

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has written to Harare town clerk, Engineer Hosiah Chisango acknowledging receipt of a letter recalling some councillors including the Mayor and his deputy.

The letter from the opposition CCC advises of the recalls of Denford Ngadziore (Ward 16), Deputy Mayor Kudzai Kadzombe (Ward 41), Mayor Ian Muteto Makone (Ward18), Lovejoy Chitegu (Ward 36), Samuel Gwenzi (Ward 5) as well as Chido Hamauswa, Tiriboyi Sabina, Florence Cheza and Matimba Fadzai (Proportional Representation Councillors).

In the letter to Local Government Minister Winston Chitando dated 7 November, the party said the councillors had ceased to be members of CCC.

“I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of a letter from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) stating that the following councillors have ceased to be members of the Citizens Coalition for Change political party.

“In terms of Section 278 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with Section (1)(k), the abovementioned wards are now vacant.

“In terms of Section 121 of the Electoral Act, please proceed to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of these vacancies,” Acting Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe wrote to Eng Chisango.

In turn Eng Chisango wrote to the affected councillors informing them about the development.

“The above subject matters refers.

“Please find attached a self-explanatory letter to myself from Hon Minister Garwe (Acting Minister of Local Government and Public Works) and be advised accordingly,” Eng Chisango wrote on November 16, 2023.

In a statement, Mr Makone said as of November 16, 2023, there were vacancies in his ward and the other affected wards.
