This year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series has been slated for December 6, 8 and 10 at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare.

The first two days of action on December 6 and 8 have been reserved for Supercross (night racing) action before the three-day event closes with a full day of some motocross racing on December 10.

The Zimbabwe Summer Series usually attracts top international dirt bike riders from the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.

And according to one of the event’s organisers, Doug Mellor, 20 top riders from South Africa have already expressed their interest in coming up here for this year’s competition.

“As we speak right now we already have 20 riders from South Africa who have expressed their interest in competing in this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series. We are also likely to have a number riders from the United States so this should point to an exciting event,” Mellor said.

South African, American, British and Zambian motocross riders have over the past years graced the Zimbabwe Summer Series at Donnybrook Park Raceway. Two of South Africa’s top riders – Jonathan and Josh Mlimi – are already in Harare preparing for this big international event.

“We are in Zimbabwe as we speak and we will be there for the Zimbabwe Summer Series and we promise some fireworks there,” the Mlimi brothers told Zimpapers Sports earlier this week.

Josh competes in the seniors MX1 Class while Jonathan is an MX2 Class rider. They will first warm-up for this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series by taking part in the sixth and final round of the 2023 Bogwheelers Club National Motocross Championship series at Donnybrook on October 22.

They are are also expected to take part in a Supercross event at the same venue on October 28. The Supercross event on October 28 will be used as a dress rehearsal of the Zimbabwe Summer Series. The Zimbabwe Summer Series is organised by the Bogwheelers Club who run this big international motocross competition on behalf of Motorsport Zimbabwe.

And the Bogwheelers Club have already secured a main title sponsor for this year’s event in Better Brands Jewellery.

Better Brands Jewellery are owned by prominent Harare businessman Scott Sakupwanya whose two young sons Mudiwa and Judah are now into motocross riding.

Interestingly, both Mudiwa and Judah made their international debut on the motocross track when they took part in last year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series at Donnybrook.

Mellor confirmed yesterday that Better Brands Jewellery were coming in as their main title sponsors after having tasted the waters last year. Mellor also said they were  trying to bring in free style riders from South Africa to spice-up this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series.

“We are going to try bring in free style riders from South Africa for display on Friday night and Sunday.

“We just want this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series to be the most exciting event in the history of this big international motocross competition.

“We also hope to start rebuilding the tracks soon with help from Better Brands Jewellery,” Mellor said.
