DOMINICAN Convent High School Harare has expelled eight students who were found with drugs at a recent leadership camp in Nyanga for violation of the school’s drug policy.

In a notice to parents, the school head Sister Kudzai Mutsure advised parents that the eight girls who were on suspension pending investigations into the incident that took place at the 2023 Upper Six leadership camp held in Nyanga from January 12-15, 2023 have been expelled with immediate effect after a disciplinary hearing.

“The disciplinary committee exercised all principles of procedural fairness and found the girls guilty of violating the school drug policy. My heart aches for these girls and their parents but my duty of care is to ensure that the school environment is, as far as is practicable, safe and free from all risks. I have a responsibility to the whole school community and possessing, using or supplying a restricted substance including vaping is not acceptable,” said Sister Kudzai in the notice dated January 26, 2023.

She said investigations were ongoing into the matter and the school will not hesitate to weed out any more culprits to sanitise the school space.

“I pray that the girls will receive the rehabilitation they need and that all the parents take an active role in partnership with the school, to modify the inappropriate behaviour of their children.

“I believe that the school officials’ efforts to protect students from the dangers of substance abuse are sometimes hampered by parents and community members in denial about the pervasiveness of the problem and the potential for any child so succumb to the lures of drugs. I appeal to parents to be more vigilant and active by refining their parenting skills and being aware of their children’s activities as our investigations show that the pervasive behaviour started at home. I will keep you posted on any further developments,” said Sister Kudzai.

Parents say they heard of heart breaking testimonies of how the youth including school children were getting into drug abuse at meeting called to discuss the matter.

Parents were urged to monitor their children’s weekend outings at Sam Levy’s Village in Borrowdale and the Queen of Hearts in Highlands. Parents were also advised to monitor children when they go to school sporting activities and functions.
