Newly-elected Harare deputy mayor Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe has reiterated her commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in local government.
Delivering her acceptance speech on Monday, Cllr Kadzombe said she understands the challenges that women face in politics, local government and public life.
She promised to work tirelessly to make sure that women’s voices are heard.
“I am committed to promote gender equality and the process of empowering women in local government. As a woman in a leadership position, I understand the challenges that women face in politics and public life, and I will work to ensure that women’s voices are heard and their contributions are valued,” said Cllr Kadzombe.
She expressed her gratitude to Government for implementing the women’s quota initiative in council as a step towards achieving gender equality.
Harare has 45 wards with elected councillors an additional 14 women councillors who got into council through the women’s quota.
“I am happy that we have 14 female councillors who were duly elected through the womens’ quota. This means we are now 21 female councillors and we will collaborate to ensure gender equality and enhancing gender responsive service delivery. I am honoured to serve as your deputy Mayor, and I look forward to working with you to build a better future for all of us,” said Cllr Kadzombe.
Cllr Kadzombe, who represents Ward 41, said she will serve with integrity and dedication.
She also said that she is committed to working tirelessly to promote sound local governance and undertake development to enhance the socio-economic development of the City of Harare working closely with Mayor Ian Makone, the rest of the councillors, the executive, residents and stakeholders.
The thrust will also be to ensure that the city is safe, prosperous, and inclusive.
