Criminals employ new tricks to hoodwink victims

Criminals are reportedly using new tricks to hoodwink residents before stealing from them. Criminals visited a house in Zimre Park, Ruwa at around 1700 hours. They were four in number and one of them was in handcuffs. They knocked at the gate and the complainant at the house responded by walking to the gate to open for the strangers.

The criminals reportedly introduced themselves as detectives from Criminal Investigations Department (CID) who were investigating a case that occurred at the house of the complainant’s neighbour.  The criminals alleged that the accused person they were holding (the one in handcuffs) might have left the loot in complainant’s yard hence they wanted to search the yard.

The unsuspecting complainant permitted the criminals to enter and do their search. In the meantime, the criminal in handcuffs removed the handcuffs and immediately pulled out a knife and pointed it at the complainant, ordering him into the house where they stole various property including laptops, cellphone, cash and a motor vehicle which they later used as their get-away car.

“It is against this background that as Zimbabwe Republic Police Rhodesville Public Relations, we urge you to remain vigilant and alert.  Do not open gates for strangers until you verify their identity through local police or NWC (Neighbourhood Watch Committee) if they come in their name.

Bank warns clients about growing card fraud cases

FBC Bank has warned its customers to be on the lookout and vigilant in the wake of the growing number of card fraud cases.

In a customer notice issued recently, the bank warned clients to be alert and guard against card fraud.

“Dear valued customer, please be advised of the growing number of card fraud cases being carried out by fraudsters. Card cloning is a type of card theft where an illegal copy of an authentic card is made and the transactions that take place on the illegal card affect the authentic card.

“Card cloning often happens on fake POS machines that collect data from authentic bank cards for copying on fake cards.

To protect your bank card from being cloned, FBC recommends the following:

“1. Upgrade your magnetic strip card to a chip and pin card (visit our branches for assistance)

“2. Insist on transacting on a POS machine that allows you to insert the card (to enable the reading of the chip and pin card) instead of swiping it (works mostly for the old magnetic cards).”

FBC Bank urged its customers to contact their 24-hour Customer Experience Department on 0242-761198/704481/2, 0772152647, 0772419693, 0732152647, toll free 080 800 25/6 or 220 (Econet numbers only), [email protected], twitter @FBCHoldings and Facebook FBC Holdings. — Issued by FBC Bank
