Harare councillors on Monday met senior council officials at Town House to get an appreciation of council operations.

The newly elected councillors met with the town clerk Engineer Hosiah Chisango and acting chamber secretary Mr Warren Chiwawa to familiarise themselves with council proceedings and the respective committees’ terms of reference.

Last week, the councillors elected the mayor and deputy mayor before they constituted council committees. Councillors are deployed into the committees depending on their skills set. The committees superintend over the local authority’s operations. The Ministry of Local Government also holds induction training for newly elected councillors.

Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Mr Gabriel Masvora recently said Government will soon be rolling out the first phase of the induction training for councillors.

“The induction is decentralised as in each local authority will do the exercise at their place.

“As for induction, it is also decentralised but will be led by our directors of Local Government Services. Each director, 10 of them, will do his or her province and come up with a work plan for the councillors in that province in the next 14 days,” said Mr Masvora.

The purpose of the induction workshops is to assist newly elected councillors to understand their roles and responsibilities and what is expected of them.
