THE City of Harare has taken its blitz to clear illegal dumpsites to Marlborough as part a programme to rid residential areas and public places of unsightly dumps.

Of late some residents had resorted to dumping their rubbish on open spaces and even at council district offices because the municipality was failing to effectively collect garbage due to incapacitation after most its refuse compactors broke down leaving it with about eight only.

The eight were being dedicated to the central business district forcing some residents to strike agreements with the municipality to repair some of the broken down garbage trucks. Borrowdale residents have repaired one truck which has since started collecting refuse in Ward 18.

On Tuesday, some Ward 41 residents confirmed seeing council front end loaders clearing the dumpsites in the ward. Ward 41 covers Marlborough, Emerald Hill, Avonlea, Bluff Hill, Westgate, Ashbrittle, Good Hope, Willow Creek, Adylin and parts of Tynwald.

“Dump clearance programme in Marlborough. Council is undertaking a blitz programme to clear dumps across the city,” the City of Harare said on its social media platforms on Tuesday.

Since last week council has been clearing the dumpsites in residential areas and at business premises and public places using front end loaders and the new tipper trucks it received recently.

The municipality has since issued a dumpsite clearance schedule for the whole capital city covering the 46 wards in Harare.

On Monday, the City of Harare took delivery of three new refuse compactors bought using devolution funds. Council said an additional seven compactors and 10 tipper trucks were on the way.
