Committee looks for more donors to provide water points

THE Water, Sanitation and Health committee formed by the City Health department through Greendale Clinic is looking for more donors to help provide more water points in Greendale in addition to the borehole at the clinic.

Speaking at a Harare East residents’ meeting held recently at Greendale Sports Club, a member of the Harare East Constituency Development Fund committee, Mr Mike Mutongerwa said the Water, Sanitation and Health Committee is trying to engage more non-governmental organisations in order to have more water points in the area.

“There’s a committee that was formed by the Harare City Health through our local clinic, called Water Sanitation and Health.  They are looking for stakeholders within our committee to represent our youths, disabled, senior citizens and the female gender.

“What they are trying to do is there is a water point by Greendale Clinic.

“The borehole was modernised from being a bush pump. It’s now solar-powered and people can now get water from water taps. So the way it’s supposed to work is the person in charge of that water point is the sister-in-charge at the clinic.

“She works hand in hand with the committee.

“So priority is given to the clinic as far as the water is concerned,” he said.

The borehole at Greendale Clinic is now solar-powered since last month. The solar system was funded by Cordaid.

Mr Mutongerwa said collection of water is free.

“But they appealed that we talk to the clinic management and we cooperate with them should it be necessary to give priority to the clinic before we collect water for our personal use.  “So they are asking for more volunteers because they are trying to engage more NGOs to provide more water points for the area.

“And if there is a demand coming from the community, it’s easier to negotiate with these donors for more water points.

“Residents can get water from the clinic as long as the clinic has enough water, they are free to offer it to the greater community of Greendale,” he said.
