On Wednesday the City of Harare informed residents it was not able to collect garbage.
In a statement on its Facebook Page, the city said: “Garbage collection is being affected by a shortage of fuel. Council has paid for its supplies and is yet to get delivery of the product. We will update when we receive fuel.”
The statement courted the ire of residents who expressed their disgust over the poor service delivery by the municipality. Below are some of the responses
Tino Jones: You are always paying to a company that doesn’t deliver. I guess its because we are paying our rates when you are not delivering too. That has to stop starting with payment of rates
Dee Ahmed: May you please give the fuel tender to a more efficient fuel dealer
Ronald Brnjac: What, you have not collected garbage along Simon Mazorodze Road opposite Mbare Police Station for over 10 years. No fuel
Nyanyirayi Blessward: Where do other councils like Marondera and Kwekwe get fuel from? Their towns are ever smart and are run efficiently. Kusangorongeka kwenyu chete City of Harare. You just have misplaced priorities
Ann Natsai Kay: Does that explain why the truck picked garbage from selected Hillside roads last week Thursday? And a few weeks ago your truck collected up to Brooks Road and left the other side of Hillside. When you decide to come, please do not select households.
No litter is better than others. It’s all litter. Or is it because some of us are not rich enough to offer drinks to the garbage guys? Yes, they ask for food. …all residents are equal, but some are more equal than the others. Sha on Thursday last week someone mentioned on the neighborhood watch group kuti refuse guys have just begun collecting from the bottom of Hillside Road. As time went by I could actually hear the horn of the truck and I also took my trash to the gate…. They never came. Wotoshaya kuti vakatorerwa Marara ndovakaita sei.
Justice O Chibanda: Once again, you raise the same issue. But what is so difficult in council importing its own fuel. Kindly explain as l fail to understand it? I know of some private companies who have been doing so!
Tee C Gee: Why can’t you just fuel at a normal garage. What’s so special about those fuel suppliers who don’t deliver? Why are you paying in advance for a product which hasn’t been delivered? Common sense not so common haaa? We demand transparency
Gail Nicholas: How does someone pay for fuel without it being delieved. Full of excuses No fuel, No water No chemicals No Zesa the line was stolen the pump broke down etc etc. Blame everyone except themselves.
Caroline Vimbainashe Chinondo: Tee C Gee exactly… They have given money to a company that is not in the fuel business. Vachamirira kusvika riinhi in the meantime they are not providing for service that people have paid for. Whose idea was it to put up the statement… “yah at least tavaudza” as if that is even acceptable.
Lissen Zinyengere: And which fuel supplier is failing with fuel abundant every corner of town
Austin Upenyu: When it comes to destroying people structures and confiscating vendor’s goods fuel is easily accessible…
Renee Snyders McMaster: I will deduct all the money I have had to pay to private removals from my account. Hope that’s ok with you
Rodgers Mustafa: How come private companies which transport heavy goods from Beira or Durban to Zimbabwe, Zambia, DRC are not stopping due to fuel shortages. Some of these companies have a fleet of more than 500 trucks but you won’t hear them complaining about fuel
Mufaro Sengwe Ziyageba: Ahhhh you guys, asi you use a type of fuel which is neither petrol nor diesel? Because those two are available in abundance now
Martin Madziire: The City of Harare is managed by a bunch of confused and clueless individuals. The so called shortages are part of the looting that continues on a daily basis within the city management hierarchy.
Ian Munashe Musso Chawanda: Why do you run capital city’s bussines like a village tuckshop
Khali KayPee OkaNdlovu: Excuses after excuses, delivery zero
Luke Dzivo: But you have enough fuel reserves to move around taking away merchandise from street vendors?
Martin Magidi: But uncollected garbage has always been the order of the day even those days when fuel was available in abundance
Etty Sox-phonela: Two-three months paying for refuse collection, but no collection, so what does it mean to us rate payers. Balance us. And you keep paying for non delivery?
Benjamin Nyandoro: Councils should just be taken over by central Government, tobva tangoziva kuti tirikunetsana ne one entity. You have proven enough times kuti capacity hapana
Phil Kalonga: Matanga futi. Again I have to dig another hole in my back yard for a garbage dump. Apo no water in my area for the past 4 years. But City of Harare mungodaro ngeyi
Susan Margolis: Stop voting for that council until they get their act together as they promise voters.
