Parents, guardians and learners who attended the event over the weekend participated in a three kilometre walk and a Zumba dance session as part of the fundraising activities.

Parents said the event was not just about raising money for the sports fields but also aimed to promote wellness through keeping fit.

“The fitness and wellness event besides it being a fundraiser for the school benefited me a lot because issues of health are of paramount importance,” said Mrs Brilliant Kazembe, a parent of a learner at Cannonbury Junior School.

“We have loosened up, had fun and this is what we benefited as parents.

“Health is very important so when you come and jump, it is good for our mental health and we need to perpetuate it even when we are back at home, we need to do checks and balances,” she said.

Mrs Nyaradzai Motsi said the event also helped to market the school and raise awareness about its existence in the community.

“People now know that there is Cannonbury Junior School in Mandara. Our children have learned about fitness and that we should not just eat and be idle but also we must exercise as well,” she said.

Cannonbury Junior School head Mr Camillo Msemburi said they were looking at establishing new sporting facilities that will support the school’s academic programmes.

“We are looking at Cannonbury developing the whole person so it involves sports and academics, “ he said.

“It is not just about academics in the classrooms but we are also talking about the sports field that is why we are raising funds.

“This event is basically a fundraiser for the development of sports at the school.

“We have sold tickets to the parents and all the proceeds will go to the development of the sports field. We  had a three kilometre walk and a Zumba dance.

“When the children come here they are going to be fit,” he said.Mr Msemburi said they were also making the Mandara community aware of wellness and fitness besides the event being a fundraiser.
