THE number of people in the middle and low density suburbs of the northern, eastern and western suburbs of Harare stands at 314 164 as at April 20, according to the preliminary results of the national census released last week.

The results show that the 314 164 people in the 10 wards under review were coming from a total of 91 790 households with the average household size varying from 2,6 people per household to 3,9 people per household.

Ward 16 (Mabelreign, Ashdown Park, Greencroft, Haig Park, Meyrick Park, Sentosa, Cotswold Hills, Sunridge, St Andrew’s Park, Bloomingdale, Madokero, Maranatha, Nkwisi Gardens, Lenana Park, Matidoda, parts of Westlea, parts of Tynwald) has the highest population at 56 597 from a total of 14 483 households.  

 The ward also has the biggest average household size with 3,9 people per household. However, the total number of households at 14 483 are lower than those in neighbouring Ward 41 which has 14 866 households. 

The second highest number of people in the wards under review is found in Ward 41 (Marlborough, Bluff Hill, Avonlea, Emerald Hill, Ashbrittle, Westgate, Good Hope, Willow Creek, parts of Tnywald) which has 55 482 people.  

Although Ward 41 has the highest number of households at 14 866, its population of 55 482 people is slightly lower than Ward 16’s population of 56 597. Ward 41 has the second biggest average household size with 3.7 people per household.

Ward 9 (Greendale, Mandara, Rhodesville, Letombo Park, Shawasha Hills, Msasa, Sunway City, Chikurubi Maximum Prison, Training Depot, Support Unit, Msasa Zimbabwe Republic Police Camp, Zimphos) has a total of population of 49 502 people from a total of 13 256 households with the average household size standing at 3.7 people per house. 

Ward 2 (Arcadia, Braeside, Eastlea North and South, Cranborne, Queensdale, St Martins, Hillside) has a total population of 30 229 people from a total of 8 786 households with an average household size of 3.4 people per house.

Ward 18 (Borrowdale, Borrowdale Brooke, Helensvale, Greystone Park, Glen Lorne, Hogerty Hill, Umwinsidale, Carrick Creagh, Colne Valley, Philadelphia) has a total population of 28 929 people from 10 089 households with an average household size of 2.9 people per house.  

The sixth highest number of people in the wards under review are found in Ward 7 (Avondale, Avondale West, Alexandra Park, Belgravia, Kensington, Strathaven, parts of Gunhill) which has 25 905 people from 7 432 households with an average household size of 3,5 people per house.  

Ward 17 (Mt Pleasant, Northwood, Arundel, Groombridge, Mt Pleasant Heights, Vainona, Borrowdale West, Pomona) has a total population of 18 486 people from 6 504 households with an average household size of 2.8 people per house.

Ward 5 (Belvedere, Milton Park, Monavale, Ridgeview) has a total population of 16,641 people living in 5 289 households in the ward with an average household size of 3.1 people per house.

Following closely is Ward 6 (Harare Central, Avenues, central business district, Montague) with a total population of 15 100 from 5 829 households with an average household size of 2.6 people per house.

The ward with the least population size in the wards under review is Ward 8 (Highlands, Chisipite, Newlands, Ballantyne Park, The Grange, parts of Eastlea, parts of Gunhill) which has a total population of 14 293 people living in 5 256 households with an average household size of 2.7 persons per house.

The Greater Harare Metropolitan Province’s total population including wards in Chitungwiza and Epworth stands at 2 427 209 people living in 653 562 households.
