The Sables punched above their weight when they accounted for their more illustrious rivals, the Bulldogs, who have always gotten the better of Allan Wilson in rugby matches.

The game between the two Harare schools headlined the midweek schools’ rugby fixtures played on Africa Day which was a holiday.

Fans who included current pupils of the two schools, former students of the two schools, parents, friends and relatives turned out in their numbers to witness the match. The victory was particularly sweet for Allan Wilson who in recent years have always fallen to rivals Churchill and Prince Edward. The match attracted so much interest among rugby fans especially former Allan Wilson students living in Zimbabwe and those dotted around the globe constantly checking the scores during the duration of the match on their social media platforms.

Most could not believe that their former school was holding its own against a formidable opponent such as Churchill and they kept praying the Sables will keep the momentum to record a win against the more fancied Bulldogs.

But as the game wore on they were smelling victory and when the final whistle was blown there was so much jubilation among the current and former students at the Graveyard ground at Allan Wilson where the game was played as well as among former students in other parts of Harare, Zimbabwe and in the Diaspora.

The former Allan Wilson students saluted the current crop of the Sables for a good showing against Churchill who were just fresh from defeating another powerhouse Prince Edward two weeks ago.

In another midweek played on Wednesday Peterhouse beat Wise Owl 25-15.

In last weekend games St John’s College continued their fine run with a 27-13 victory over visitors Lomagundi College while St George’s College’s Saints got the better of Prince Edward drubbing the Tigers 34-10.  Marondera-based Peterhouse beat visitors Falcon College while Kyle College emerged the victors in a tightly contested affair against Watershed College beating their opponents 19-18. Mutare’s Hillcrest College beat Hellenic Academy 34-5 while Gateway High School outscored Bulawayo’s Petra 9-5. Meanwhile, in keeping with tradition the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board hosted a tie and colours presentation ceremony for the Under 14, Under 17 and Under 19 boys who have been selected to represent the Province at the National Trials. For the Under 14’s the trials will be at Gateway High School and for the Under 17 and Under 19 trials will be at Lomagundi College.

The event was attended by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union vice president South Martin Shone and the headmaster of Christian Brothers’ College Bulawayo Kizito Muhomba, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union said.
