Action galore in school fixtures Zimbabwe Under 21 women’s hockey team departs for Egypt.

IT has been action galore on the schools sporting calendar with athletes accomplishing achievements ranging from winning inter-schools tournaments, undertaking international tours and making the grade into junior Zimbabwe national teams and the opportunity to represent their country.

Marondera-based Peterhouse won the recent national rowing regatta which was the last event of the first term. The Peterhouse rowers are now preparing for a tour of South Africa where they take part in the South African Schools Championships in Pretoria.

“Congratulations to our rowers who won the points trophy to bring home, once again, the Rowing Association Zimbabwe (RAZ) Nationals shield to Peterhouse for 2023.

This was the last local regatta of the term at Mazowe Dam. With beautiful racing conditions and many victories, the RAZ Nationals was an excellent start to the championship season.

“Well done to all the rowers for a very successful day of competition. Please wish the rowers luck as the boat club prepares for their tour to the South African Schools Champs in Pretoria, South Africa,” Peterhouse said in a post on their Facebook Page.

Chisipite Senior hosted an inter-schools track and field athletics friendly where five schools participated and the hosts were placed second. The Green Machine, as Chisipite Senior’s sporting teams are known, were in top form as their athletes won 22 first places in the both the track and field events. 

“Congratulations to Athletics Captain Ruth Kativu who led from the front, coming first in both the Under 19 100M and 100M Hurdles races, as well as the Under 19 Triple Jump and Long Jump events,” the school said in an updated of results of its latest sporting fixtures.

Hayley Chingono also dashed to first position in the Under 17 100M and 200M races.

At Under 14 level Rachel O’Donoghue came first in the 800M and 1500M races where for the latter event she posted a top time and was awarded a trophy.

Rebeca Winsor and Zara Fick came first in the Under 16 and Under 15 800M events respectively, with the former getting the best time, while Tawana Kunyetu-Lambert emerged as the winner of the Under 14 400M race.

In the relays the Under 17 and Open 4 x 100M teams powered to victory.

In the high jump events Michaela Mcnab and Alexis Johnsen emerged first in the Under 19 and Under 14 age group competitions, respectively. Noor Shahzad and Maitashe Chikuni triumphed in the Under 17 and Under 16 Long Jump while in the Under 16 Triple Jump Tinotenda Muzadzi came first.

In discus, Mwaita Shava and Rachel Foster came first in the Under 19 and Under 14 events, respectively.

Kelly Chakurira and Rachel Foster won the Under 15 and Under 14 Javelin events.

Chisi also took the opportunity to wish the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe Under 21 teams the best as they participate in the 2023 Junior Africa Cup being hosted in Egypt.

Four Green Machine players  Jorja Jones (Games Captain 2020), Rumbidzaiishe Zimuto (current Games Captain), Danielle Lowe (2022 Hockey First Team) and  Ella Allardice (Co Games Captain 2022) are part of the ladies team carrying Zimbabwe’s hopes at the games. 

The ladies team play their first match this Sunday where they will square off against South Africa.

The stakes are high as the winners and runners-up of the ladies and men’s tournament will qualify directly for the 2023 Junior World Cup.
